Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an admission charge for this event?

Answer:

Although the Pets in The Pearl is a free event, it is first and foremost a fundraiser to benefit two local nonprofit organizations – the Cat Adoption Team (CAT) and DoveLewis. For this reason we hope you'll help out with a contribution of $5.00 or more. And that's going to be more fun than you think! !

Proceeds from Pets in The Pearl will help CAT and DoveLewis continue to provide vital care to hundreds of our community’s injured strays or lost pets who have nowhere else to go. Through a unique partnership between DoveLewis and CAT, stray cats often receive emergency and stabilizing care at DoveLewis, followed by a transfer to CAT where they may receive ongoing care or find a new, loving home.

Is my donation tax deductible?

Answer:

Proceeds from Pets in The Pearl will be divided equally between Cat Adoption Team and DoveLewis, both 501(c)(3) charitable organizations (Cat Adoption Team Tax ID: 20-0773189, DoveLewis Tax ID: 93-0621534). This means that all direct donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law, and you will receive a receipt with this information for your tax records.

Some of the people I approach for donations ask me about tax receipts – what should I tell them?

    Answer:

Because both DoveLewis and the Cat Adoption Team are classified as 501(c)(3) publicly supported charities, donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Receipts are handled differently depending on how the donation is made:

      • Those who make their donations online are automatically emailed a tax receipt.
      • For donations submitted via mail, a tax receipt is mailed directly to the donor.
      • If you collect and submit a group of donations, the Event Coordinator will send directly to you receipts for the people on your donation list, and you can distribute them personally.

Can you give me more details about the vaccinations and microchipping?

    Answer:

Good Neighbor Vet (GNV) will be offering a full pet health exam performed by a licensed veterinarian, pet microchipping, as well as diagnostic testing for heartworm, feline HIV and leukemia. During their pet health exams they record the animal’s heart rate, temperature, respiration, weight, general appearance, and any other comments that the veterinarian notes on a computerized system. In addition to their pet wellness exams, GNV educates its customers about zoonotic disease, and the importance of heartworm and flea/tick prevention.

All About Microchipping Identification for Dogs and Cats
Microchipping is recognized as the most effective and secure way of permanently identifying a pet. The technology to microchip has been around since 1989 and since then approximately 1.5 million dogs and cats have been microchipped.

      • What is microchipping?
The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is encased in a biocompatible glass, the same used in human pacemakers, to prevent rejection from the animals body. In dogs, the microchip is inserted into the loose skin on the back of the dog's neck using a specially designed implanting device. Insertion is a quick and easy process that causes no more discomfort than a usual vaccination.
      • How does the microchip work?
Each microchip carries a unique number that is logged onto a national database. Against this number key information is stored about the dog and its owner including the dog's name, the owner's name and address and a record of the dog's vaccinations. When a scanner is passed over the microchip low frequency radio waves created by the scanner activate the microchip, allowing the unique number to be read.
      • How long does a microchip last?
Microchipping is an inexpensive investment as it should last for the life of your dog or cat.
      • Does my dog or cat have to be a particular age before it can be chipped?
It is recommended that a dog or cat have their final vaccinations before being microchipped.
      • Will implanting the chip hurt my dog or cat?
Not at all, microchipping is a quick and painless procedure that should not hurt more than the pet’s vaccinations.

I'm interested in adopting – once I’ve made a decision can I take a pet home that day?

    Answer:

The answer is "yes" – and "no".

There will be several rescue organizations bringing pets for you to meet – and each has its own guidelines on to how to increase the likelihood that any resulting adoption will last a lifetime. A new family member should not be a spur-of-the-moment addition.

Be prepared to fill out an adoption application and to be interviewed by adoption counselors – our versions of "match-makers" – who are familiar with the personalities of the pets in their charge. It may well be that your perfect match is still back at the shelter!

    Will there be parking available?

    Answer:

    • SmartPark at Station Place Garage can be entered on NW 9th & Marshall, near Union Station. With 400 spaces, 24-hour access and parking validation from selected retailers, you don’t have to worry about parking in The Pearl again!
